16 inch ultra light weight telescope - version 2.0
Dear ATMers,
It has been a long waiting for the carbon fiber tubes. They finally arrived.
Immediately I upgraded my single pole 16 incher to a carbon fiber struss design. Carbon fiber is very light weight yet capable of bearing huge tension. A little bit high-tech taste is added to this final version of the 16 incher.
Each carbon fiber tube has a diameter of 6 mm and a total length of 1500 mm. In order to fit in the suitcase for air travel the carbon fiber tubes were cut to a length of 500 mm, and connected by PVC connectors when in use.
A top ring was also added to fix up the focuser, the single arm diagonal holder and the finderscope. The additional top ring and the 8 carbon fiber struss has a total weight just below that of the wooden single pole and the steel cables. So the total weight of version 2.0 is still below 15 kg but with the advantage of stability of struss structure.
Now I have two options at hand to choose from – the carbon fiber struss or the wooden single pole. I opt for carbon fiber (obviously).
Best regards

- This is what you see when looking in to the focuser without eyepiece. The diagonal mirror is the smallest (2.6 inches minor axis) that can still cover all the light cone from the primary mirror.

- The carbon fiber struss structure, version 2.0. The total weight is slightly less than the single pole but it vastly improves the stability.

- Version1.0, the single pole structure. It’s simple and light weight yet cannot offer the same stability a struss design have.
