One needs to have a rough alignment first. And then using drifting to do the fine tuning. I guess in the first stage, rough alignment, is too rough. So the stars drift away very fast. Even in the rough alignment, it should be reasonably close to the right position. In most of the websites about drifting alignment, they start the discussion from the details & principles, which is a bit involving. Ignore those details and focus on "how" only. It can make life easier.

from my windows , i only can see saturn and spica... i cant see polaris.. i did a rough alignment to north... even with compass... then i use android app call skeyes to check the star location... the ra n dec reading is not accurate.. my stars always drift upward to the left... weird.. feel that EQ setup is so hard... cant even take a picture more than 5s at 105mm with dslr.. so sad...

If ur window or location couldn't see the Polaris, it would be difficult. Rough alignment for astrophotography means u can see the Polaris in the polar scope's Polaris circle. It means the error is less than 45 arc mins. Just use compass is not enough.

http://arnholm.org/astro/polar_alignment/index.html

Don't be sad anyway. Every astrophotographer go through all these challenges. Unlike ordinary photography, if u have a camera, u can shot something. But for astrophotography, with instruments, u may still shot nothing.

If you use DSLR to drift align, try this method: http://www.hkastroforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=20047

If you find drifting in a East-West direction, the mount/motor is not accurate enough and it cannot be resolved by polar alignment.

BTW, if your photo g.jpg is concerned, it is aberration not tracking error.

While DEC is not involved in tracking, it is very useful in the fine adjustment of the aim.

I have never tried this but in princple it can work. However, either you make you own optical isolater (relay) board or you need a USB->Guide Port converter.

You need the DEC motor for better autoguide, so don't remove it.

A GPUSB (i.e. USB to guide-port interface) costs $800 (including shipping), a sensitive webcam $400-$600, guidescope and mounting etc, $600-$900. So you determine whether it is worth.

About US$100 or HK$800.

If you use QHY CMOS products as guide cameras, you do not need to have a GPUSB. There is one on the camera body.

For guiding, it is better to use a monochrome camera (QHY5) than a colour one (QHY5T).

Eq3 加guideport 可參考以下原廠方案
