Independent discovery by:
- Koichi Itagaki (Teppo-cho, Yamagata, Japan), reported by S. Nakano (Sumoto, Japan)
- All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN, http://www.astronomy.ohio-state.edu/~as ... ndex.shtml),
reported by B. J. Shappee (Hubble Fellow, Carnegie Observatories) et al.
Discovery magnitude:
- Itagaki: 12.4 unfiltered, using a 0.21-m f/3.0 reflector
- ASAS-SN: 15.2 V
Discovery date:
- Itagaki: 2015 October 5.548 UT
- ASAS-SN: 2015 October 01.29 UT
Coordinates (2000.0): R.A. 19 21 50.15 Dec. +15 09 24.8 (from VSX)
Spectra: Originally reported as a U Gem-type dwarf nova, ASASSN-15qd was reclassified as a highly reddened classical nova based on spectroscopic observations obtained by M. Fujii (Okayama, Japan) on
2015 October 5.598 UT and reported by H. Maehara (Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, NAOJ). Fujii's spectrum is posted at:
http://tinyurl.com/qbllf74. Colin Littlefield (LCO, Middletown, CT) also confirmed the nature of ASASSN-15qd with his spectrum taken
2015 October 6.06 UT (vsnet-alert 19121, vsnet-alert 19127). His spectrum is posted at:
https://wesfiles.wesleyan.edu/xythoswfs ... t_bcWE8JkG.
Observing recommendations: This nova is faint, but observations of all types (visual, CCD, DSLR, spectroscopy) as instrumentation permits are strongly encouraged as this nova evolves.
Charts: Charts for Nova Aql 2015 may be created using the AAVSO Variable Star Plotter (VSP) at http://www.aavso.org/vsp. Be sure to include spaces in the name as shown.
Observations reported to the AAVSO (observations are via CBET 4147 unless otherwise noted):

06.452 13.5 U (T. Noguchi, Chiba-ken, Japan);
Submit observations: Please submit observations to the AAVSO International Database using the name NOVA AQL 2015. Be sure to include spaces in name as shown. Once a GCVS name has been assigned, please use that name.
Notes:
a. Announced in IAU Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Central Bureau Electronic Telegram 4147 (Daniel W. E. Green, ed.).
Assigned the name PNV J19215012+1509248 when posted to the IAU CBAT Transient Object Confirmation Page (TOCP) at http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/unconf/tocp.html
b. Although the ASAS-SN discovery image was obtained earlier, Itagaki's report was received at the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams over half a day prior to Shappee et al.'s announcement in ATel #8126.
c. Itagaki reports nothing visible at this location on his earlier images. Shappee et al. (ATel #8126) report nothing was seen at this location on ASAS-SN images taken 2015 September 12.35 UT and before, and that no previous outbursts are detected in the previous 52 epochs of ASAS-SN data at this location since ASAS-SN started observing the Galactic plane in February 2015.
d. Maehara et al. (ATel #8127, http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=8127)
report the nova was not detected on KWS (see above) Ic-band archival images 2013 May 12.777 - 2015 Sep 21.452 UT (typical limiting mag about Ic=12).
e. T. Maccarone (Texas Tech University, ATel #8136,
http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=8136) reports that a search of the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey database yields an infrared counterpart at the position of the nova with K=17.1+-0.1.
The source is UGPS J192150.15+150924.8 (Lucas et al. 2008, MNRAS, 391, 136).
