AAVSO Alert Notice 477

Supernova 2013E in IC 2532 = PSN J10000552-3414013 January 9, 2013

Event: Supernova 2013E in IC 2532 = PSN J10000552-3414013

Discovered by: Stuart Parker (Canterbury, New Zealand)

Discovery Date: 2013 Jan. 4.58 UT

Discovery Magnitude: red mag 14.8 on a 30-s unfiltered CCD image taken with a 30-cm Astro-Tech AT12RC Ritchey-Chretien astrograph (+ ST10 camera) at his Parkdale Observatory in the course of the Backyard Observatory Supernova Search (BOSS)

Position: R.A. 10 00 05 .52 Decl. -34 14 01.3 (2000.0) 2" east and 19" south of the nucleus of IC 2532

Spectra: Spectroscopy obtained 2013 Jan. 6.16 UT with the 2.5-m du Pont telescope (+ WFCCD) at Las Campanas Observatory (LCO) by the Carnegie Supernova Project and reported by N. Morrell, E. Y.
Hsiao, C. Contreras, and M. Phillips (LCO) indicates that SN 2013E is a type-Ia supernova several days before maximum brightness.

Charts: SN 2013E has been submitted to VSX. Once it is approved, finder charts for SN 2013E may be plotted using the AAVSO Variable Star Plotter (VSP) at http://www.aavso.org/vsp

Reporting Observations: Please report all observations to the AAVSO International Database as SN 2013E.

Notes:
a. Initially announced in Central Bureau for Electronic Telegrams
3378 (Daniel W. E. Green, ed.). All information in this AAVSO Alert Notice comes from CBET 3378.

b. According to Green, the object was designated PSN J10000552-3414013 when posted on the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams' Transient Objects Confirmation Page (TOCP) webpage (http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/unconf/tocp.html), and was designated SN 2013E based on spectroscopic reports.

c. Nothing was visible down to magnitude 19 at this position on Digitized Sky Survey red and infrared images.

d. CCD images obtained remotely: 2013 Jan. 5.452 UT, 15.0V (S.
Kiyota, Tsukuba, Japan, using a 0.25-m f/3.4 astrograph + SBIG ST-10XME camera at the iTelescope.net observing site near Mayhill, NM); 6.469, 14.0R (J. Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia, using a 51-cm RCOS telescope at the New Mexico Skies Observatory near Mayhill, NM, position end figures 05.57s, 00.7").

e. Image by Parker posted at http://tinyurl.com/bf629tb. Image by Brimacombe posted at http://www.flickr.com/photos/43846774@N02/8360132374/.

Congratulations to Stuart Parker on his discovery!
