Drift alignment using a DSLR camera---

As this may be of interest to the international astrophotographers, I provide the English version first.

I started using an AstroTrac TT320X-AG recently and would like to be able to drift align the mount (also just in case where the polar star and/or delta Ursa Minor are not visible).

I search the WWW and cannot found any description of how one can do that. Some methods suggest that the camera be removed and a reticle eyepiece be used – not quite an option for those using camera lens for astrophotography. Other methods require that the speed of the RA axis be changed by pressing a button, not necessary practical for many light equatorial mounts for photography.

The method I developed requires no eyepiece and no control of the RA axis movement. It can be used on any DSLR systems with camera lenses or telescopes. The relevant mounts concerns include
AstroTrac TT320X
Eyebell CD-1
Kenko Skymemo
Orion Min-EQ table-top
Maxvision JE120
Toast pro
Scopehouse Travel-partner (TP-1)
Vixen Photoguider
As well as any mount converted with EQ1 type of equatorial telescope mounts.

To do drift alignment using a DSLR camera, one need
(a) A photographic equatorial mount capable of reasonable accurate tracking of the RA-axis.
(b) A DSLR system (camera + lens/telescope) with a shutter cable (electronic timer type is better). The camera must have a preview function with screen of reasonable size.
(c) A supporting mount capable of micro adjustment of the azimuth and the altitude of pole pointing using some screw system. (Most German equatorial mounts, including JE120 and photoguider, have built-in micro adjustment. Other mounts may need something like a Manfrotto 410, Eyebell micro-guider mount, AstroTrac TW3100 wedge).
(d) A black card (plastic or paper) large than the aperture of the lens/telescope or for aperture small than the palm, a black grove or a black cloth to cover your hand.

For reason below, I would call this the Tang’s exclamation mark method.

Steps:
1. Do a rough polar alignment. It can be achieved using a pipe, a laser pointer or even a tilt degree ruler with a compass. Make sure the camera system has been properly focused.
2. Point the telescope to the East to an area with stars as close to the horizon as possible. (It can do with the Western horizon but directions are reversed)
3. With RA tracking on, shoot that region with the same time setting that you intend to take astrophotography of celestial objects.
4. After about 1/6 of the time, cover the lens/telescope with the black card or your hand wrapped in black. Cover it for about 1/4 of the total time. The idea is that if polar alignment is off, the stars in the photo will show a line. However, there is no way to know where a star starts and where a star end. By covering the lens for part of the exposure time, part of the line has no light falling on it. This part is more close to the beginning of the exposure period than to the end. So one can tell the direction of the star moving on the photograph.
e.g. 3 minute exposure. 0-30s normal, 31-75s covered, 76-180s normal.
5. See photo-1 below. There is some exclamation marks on the photo. The dash indicates the end of the exposure period and the dot is the beginning. Now the direction of the star movement can be determined. If the star actually move South, i.e toward the right hand side, you mount has move north of the true celestial equator. That would mean that you polar pointing is too low. Adjust slightly the altitude screw(s) so that you RA axis is moving a bit away from northern horizon. (Nothing that with most refractors and most catadioptics, the photographic image displayed on the preview screen is an erect image with no reversal of left and right, be careful which way is left and right in using Newtonian)
6. Take another photo the same way as in step (4)., if the adjustment is not adequate, there will be smaller exclamation marks. If the adjustment is more than enough, exclamation marks in the reverse direction will be seen. Further adjust according.
7. When the polar alignment error is small, stars are no long exclamation marks but just elongated dots. (see photo 2) The direction of movement of such a dot can be determined by the fact that the starting area has less total light [about half according to step (4)) than the ending area. Knowing the direction of error, you can adjust the altitude pointing the same way as in (5) but using finer steps.
8. Once the near-horizon adjustment produces no or very small error, point the lens/telescope upwards to a area near the zenith of the celestial equator (i.e. DEC~0). Take photo the same way as in step (4). If exclamation marks are seen, determine the direction of the star-images movement. If the star images are moving North, it means the lens/telescope has pointed to South of the true celestial equator. The polar alignment is too much towards the west (or left standing facing north). Turn the azimuth screw(s) so that the mount moves a bit clockwise (view from the top).
9. Repeat step 8 until no elongation of star images is observed. [For direction of small drift, please refer to (7)]
10. For high accuracy, repeat steps 4 to 9. When both photos near the Eastern (or Western) horizon and zenith show no elongation within the time frame. The polar alignment is perfect to photographing any area using the same exposure time and focal length.

Note: if there is East-West direction movement, the tracking is not accurate enough or there is flexure in the mount. Polar alignment cannot resolve that. The mount need tuning. If there is an elongated North South star without any sign of a brighter side, there is, most likely, vibration in the system.

I tried the method first time last evening. It took 70 minutes (including a few deliberate testing) to reach perfect alignment for three minutes tracking with a 310mm focal length telescope using deliberately rough polar alignment. However, with practice (the length of the exclamation point actual tells how much screw turning is needed so the number of steps to reach the perfect spot can be significantly reduced), I think drift alignment can be completed in less than seven times the exposure time, i.e. for 3 minutes exposure, in about 21 minutes.

While the technique has been developed for astrophotographic mount, it can be used on any equatorial mount.

AstroTrac TT320X
Eyebell CD-1
Kenko Skymemo
Orion Min-EQ table-top
Toast pro
Travel-partner (TP-1)
Vixen Photoguider

CCD Polar Alignment
