Big sunspot
Big sunspot
Solar observers (I know that there are now a few more since yesterday), you MUST take a look at the big sunspot. I've just seen it and it is amazing! I hope that the weather is still good enough later today when I have finished my lessons to take some quick shots.

yes~~~

Yeah! I saw two sunspots in the afternoon. The location is about 4:00 to 5:00. [想入非非] Which was exactly the location of this one:

I also saw a prominence at about 12:00, which last for about 10 mins. [想入非非] But I am not skillful enough to take photos.

LS100T+2x (f=1600mm) + DMK21 camera. Seeing was simply ugly.
LS100T is compromised in many ways when compared with LS100F. Hence the photo is rather non-uniform and it will take more patience to hide the problems (and I don't have that kind of patience today, especially when seeing is poor.). The advantage of the LS100T scope is that it is very easy to set up. Also, if you are using it for visual only, the non-uniformity is much less noticeable.

Thanks for sharing your first light with students. The comments you got in your school are very similar to mine! If the observation is longer, sometimes students will tell me some change that they can notice ("Sir, there is not only a prominence on the left, there is actually one more near to the top."), and I encourage other students to check others' discovery. It is fun. They are 'monitoring' the sun in real time!xiaoer
I also saw the sun yesterday but the image was just ugly due to lots of thin clouds around. Sadly, the sunspot is already decaying today.
I very much agree with the point you made above. In fact, telling students what to notice is very important even for other objects, I think. e.g. If no one tells the students what to look for in an image of a moon, then the moon is not worth a second look at all. It becomes boring very quickly. However, if told what to look for, it actually changes every day or even every 30 minutes. There was once when I watched the moon with a young girl with their parents, who were just walking by my set-up on the street. I showed them how to watch the moon for 30 minutes. Durng that time, they saw clearly the change in shadow in Copernicus. They were really seeing sunrise in a distant crater!

You may not believe it, but LS35F is better at showing prominence than LS100T. I'll show you why on Saturday. Hope that the weather will cooperate.willis 寫:Yeah! I saw two sunspots in the afternoon. The location is about 4:00 to 5:00. [想入非非] Which was exactly the location of this one:
