More Lunt CaK observation (20081015)

Today, I had more time to use the Lunt CaK scope visually at around 1pm-3pm. The purple disk was observable by all those who I invited to try in school today. At low magnification, the disk was actually rather bright and there was no need to dark-adapt or search very hard for it.

It was not possible to see any surface details visually but it was possible to roughly focus visually by looking at the edge of the solar disk, just like using h-alpha scopes. I viewed with a zoom eyepiece set at around 16mm and asked someone to slowly obstruct the objective with a black card. Surprisingly, only when the objective was almost totally obstructed was I not able to see the disk any more. So the disk was rather bright.

Again, photography was attempted but with the use of 2.5x powermate. At this magnification, seeing limited the sharpness of the photo more than h-alpha (which was tried later) as expected.

The comparison animation shows that the long filament is something that is coming OUT of the solar surface. This is something that is rather hard to see when viewing the two pictures separately.

I hope no one faint when viewing the animations
