That's true. I've been thinking about that too. I've looked at some 7 feet robotic domes and they cost US$4K to 7K plus shipping.

However, it seems much more meaningful if they could be installed somewhere in China like XinJiang rather than HK where our sky is always a mess.
Of course then there's the problem of finding someone to look after the setups if anything goes 'hic-cup'.
I think this is a great idea to share the project cost among a few buddies which would otherwise be too much. We can perhaps work with some mainland partners for some dark sky communities.

Your idea seems quite tempting except the fact that we are facing problems of managing the obervatory, especially inside China.
Running a robotic observatory, if they are to be a joint project, requires teamwork of many stakeholders and each one has their own benefit. It is qute impossible to compromise among them and least to say to run teh observatory smoothly.
Many successful robotic observatory, therefore, are owned privately by one party ( Such as those owned by Bill Young,or by Robert Gendler....). There exist a few puiblic robotic observatories - they either charge an expensive hourly rate ( commercially operated ) or suffer from a very long qeue time ( educational purposes ). We had submitted a job request on one public educational robotic observatory just to find out that we have to wait for years before the data comes.
Mind you, we are still waiting for that data.
Best regards
