Exhibition of 30 inch telescope

Dear ATMers,

The open day of Queen's College will be held from Friday ( today ) till 6:30 p.m. tomorrow. As usual the 30 inch telescope will be displayed at the roof of the school.

All are welcomed to come and supply your valiable critic at will on this big beast.

Sadly this telescope have only been serving as an exhibit after its completion a year ago. It has never tried under the stars. Hopefully when you see this equipment next time, it is under starry sky.

Dear Mr. Lau,

Yes, indeed !!!

This was supposed to be a science project for students. Unlike its little brother ( the 24 inch telescope) who sees a lot of sky, this telescope never used under real stars.

We plan to use this big scope in Water Mouth on 11st July, for another joint school function.

Dear Mr. Hunter,

I guess that you have come and seen the telescope yourself.

The maximum secondary mirror that money can buy is a 4 inch minor axis. Although some have quoted that a 6 inch minor is available but I never found it in market ( even if I do, the cost would be prohibitively high ).

With this in mind we must use the intruding focusing method to accomodate a small diagonal into a big primary. This will increase the tude length a little bit but I can gaurantee that this is already the shortest 30 inch Newtonian in the world.

With a f/3 primary mirror we already break the record of fastest 30 inch hoemade Newtonian primary.

就係杜蘇氏式水平儀.

只要align好一粒星, 再用program由equatorial coordinate轉到水平式coordinate就可以用人手摩打goto.

Dear Mr/Miss ambuyli,

Yes !! Although nobody dare to mention it the ending was, as all knew, very sad.

But a new mirror is coming. With a super fast focal ratio of f/2.8 it again break the record of the shortest 30 inch Newtonian in the world. Though the fabrication of this super fast mirror has been very tricky it has entered into its final figuring stage nevertheless. First light will not be far away.

Soon, very soon, the waiting will be over.
