太空館講座 - 從原行星盤到不同的系外行星系統 (英語)

文章 二打六 » 週一 22 10月, 2012 17:11

Topic: From Protoplanetary Disks to Extrasolar Planets
Speaker: Professor Thomas Henning (Director of Max Planck Institute for Astronomy)
Date and Time: October 28, 2012 (Sunday) at 7:30 pm
Venue: Lecture Hall, Hong Kong Space Museum, Tsim Sha Tsui

Abstract

Since the first detection of an extrasolar planet around a solar-type star in 1995, astronomers have discovered more than 800 planets beyond the Solar System. The most amazing feature of this planet population is its enormous diversity: very close-in giant planets, planets on eccentric orbits and in resonances, planets on wide orbits, and objects in stellar binary systems exist in space. The talk will discuss the various discoveries, including the recent detection of Super-Earths. It will also describe the properties of proto-planetary disks - the cradles of planetary systems and will discuss the connection between these dusty gas disks and the observed planet population.
About the Speaker

Professor Thomas Henning has been the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy since 2001. He works in the field of star and planet formation and is an expert in the modeling of protoplanetary disks around young stars -- an early stage in the evolution of planetary systems. Professor Henning has been involved in large cooperative research projects, such as instrument-building for the European Space Agency space telescope Herschel, for the James Webb Space Telescope and the Spitzer Legacy Project "Formation of Planetary Systems", several Herschel legacy projects, the Pan-STARRS survey and the HAT-South transit network.
