Speakers: Dr Enrico Costa and Dr Gerald Fishman, 2011 Shaw Laureates in
Astronomy
Title: Gamma-ray Bursts: The Largest and Most Distant Explosions in
the Universe

Dr Enrico Costa, Director of Research, Institute of Space Astrophysics and
Cosmic Physics (Rome), National Institute of Astrophysics, Italy, and Dr
Gerald Fishman, Senior Astrophysicist, NASA- Marshall Space Flight Center,
USA, are jointly awarded this year’s Shaw Prize in Astronomy for their
leadership of space missions that enabled the demonstration of the
cosmological origin of gamma ray bursts, the brightest sources known in
the universe.

The two laureates will speak on the topic "Gamma-ray Bursts: The Largest
and Most Distant Explosions in the Universe". The phenomenon of
gamma-ray bursts is among the greatest discoveries in astronomy of the
past century. The two distinguished speakers will discuss some of the
properties of gamma-ray bursts, how these properties have provided the
statistical evidence for a remote location, and how the bursts can be
used as tools for examining some of the conditions at the earliest times
after the Big Bang. This promises to be an enlightening talk that will
help us understand the origin of our universe.

Dr Enrico Costa has kindly agreed to come to UST to give the Shaw Prize Lecture in Astronomy today at 3pm at Cheung On Tak Lecture Theater (LT E).
This will be the only Shaw Prize lecture this year as all others have been cancelled due to the typhoon.
