Wongsir

The 12-inch telescope was donated to HKU around 1980/81 together with the mounting, etc.roh
Roh,

It was moth-balled for more than 10 years at HKU, and finally re-erected in the then newly built dome on top of the New Physics Department. However, the mounting was not re-useable, and a new mount, based on the original design, was made. Computer control was added with the help of an engineer from Beijing Observatory.
Unfortunately, the computer control could not work through the 2000 millenium bug. Moreover, the telescope was deemed not enough for serving the Astronomy students, thus it was dismantled and a new 16-inch RC reflector was installed in its place.
The OTA should still be with the Space Museum.

Abstract below is his email (3/2008)...
Dear Wong Sir,
.........
..... I am particularly happy and proud to see that those fine and practical astronomy related products are produced by our mother country.
I wish those telescopes and accessories were available during my teen age period.
I can never forget the difficulties and numerous red tapes I had to order to import even a toy-liked 9cm Newtonian telescope from New York
when I was a high school boy; then in early 1953 when I imported a 16.5cm F10 clock-driven Newtonian reflector with setting circles from England,
I was arrested by local policemen near the Shatin Police Station for being suspected of smuggling weapon into Hong Kong!
You are actually doing somthing very meaningful, a good job for the general public, and I want to congratulate you. Wishing you a very successful and prosperous business!

Mr Liu is definitely a legend in HK amateur astronomy! I also had the privilege to visit his observatory in Shengshui as a school astro club function (~1975/6). It is an event I'll never forget. I remember, as a gift, he gave us a photo of pluto he captured using his scope. At the time, it was something we can only dream of...
As a side note, I thought his scope was a 12.5" newtonian/cassegrain? I remember it has been the largest scope in Hong Kong for quite a number of years in those days...
